The hotel’s name stems from ‘Säumen’ meaning seamers and trading dealers who traveled with horses and mules loaded with goods. These dealers were primarily responsible for making deals and trading goods between northern and southern Europe. The Säumertaverne became a quiet haven for the traders and their animals amidst their lengthy and difficult travels. The Säumertaverne served as a peaceful oasis where traders, travelers and their animals took refuge, relaxed and were well looked after before continuing on their extensive journeys.
As a result, the history of the Säumertaverne in Gündlischwand makes it both an interesting and enticing place to visit. As previously mentioned, both the hotel and the mountain cabin date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, but in 1982, a tragic fire destroyed the main hotel building. A year later, it was restored and rebuilt to match the authentic, architectural designs of its original structure. The entire construction process was like reliving an era of Swiss history all over again.
